Over 100 early voting sites now open in Chicago, Cook County

Image
It’s now easier for Chicago voters to cast an early ballot in the Nov. 8 general election, with polling sites opening Monday in all 50 wards. Dozens more early voting sites opened in suburban Cook County, as well, giving area residents more than 100 places to cast early ballots. The ward sites are in addition to the Supersite in the Loop, at 191 N. Clark St., and the Chicago Board of Elections office, 69 W. Washington St. Both opened Oct. 7. All early voting locations will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays, according Marisel Hernandez, chair of the election board. Early voting sites will keep those hours through Nov. 7. All but the board of elections site will remain open on Election Day, as well, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. An early voting site at the Bucktown branch of the Chicago Public Library. Inflation is dominant topic on earnings calls. What execs are saying

Pepsi products are displayed for sale in a Target store on March 8, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. Mario Tama | Getty Images One thing is clear at the start of the corporate earnings season: inflation remains a hot topic for companies. About two-thirds of companies in the S&P 500 that reported earnings in the first two weeks of the season (Oct. 10-21) had representatives mention inflation, according to a search of conference call transcripts by FactSet. Included among those companies are PepsiCo, Citigroup and Abbott Laboratories. “The environment is clearly still very inflationary with a lot of supply chain challenges across the industry,” said PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta. The snack and beverage company beat analyst expectations for both revenue and earnings per share as its price hikes buoyed its bottom line, even as some units saw volume declines. Recent economic data shows little sign of inflation letting up. The consumer price index increased 0.4% in September, whic

Apple’s App Review Fix Fails to Placate Developers

Image
The new appeals process can save an app after it has been rejected, but developers say the most frustrating and time-consuming aspects of Apple’s process appear unchanged. An app can be bogged down by weeks or months of written exchanges with reviewers via Apple’s App Store Connect website before it is formally rejected. In 2020, Ben Fry saw his company Fathom’s Covid tracker app for institutions rejected for offering medical advice—a function entirely absent from the service. He turned to the appeals process after multiple exchanges with Apple and the app was later approved without changes. Another of Fry’s apps was shot down for not providing enough utility, only to be accepted after an appeal for being “well-designed.” Fry says his company now actively avoids the App Store and produces web apps instead. “Every experience I’ve had with submitting an app has been a nightmare,” Fry says. “Apple’s involvement is personally frustrating and a huge professional liability.” Nelson,

Beyond Meat’s steak substitute coming to grocery stores

Beyond Steak Source: Beyond Meat Beyond Meat is launching a steak substitute in grocery stores on Monday. The new product will roll out nationwide at more than 5,000 Kroger other Walmart stores, as well as Albertsons , Ahold Delhaize Jewel-Osco, Sprouts and other local grocers. The announcement concludes a rocky month for the maker of meat alternatives. Beyond ousted Chief Operating Officer Doug Ramsey after he was arrested for allegedly biting another man’s nose. The company also announced plans to cut 19% of its workforce, or roughly 200 employees, as well as the departure of its chief financial officer and the elimination of the chief growth officer role. Amid the chaos, Beyond and Yum Brands’ Taco Bell started testing meatless carne asada using its Beyond Steak product at restaurants in Dayton, Ohio. The Beyond Steak that will be sold in grocery stores comes packaged in bite-sized pieces. It uses faba bean protein as its base and contains 21 grams of protein per servi

‘Cabinet of Curiosities’: Guillermo del Toro presents a sampler of stylish, spooky stories.

Image
At the outset of each episode of “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities,” the great filmmaker and master of the macabre himself ambles into frame wearing an impeccable three-piece suit, holding a key that unlocks an intricately carved, multi-tiered cabinet filled with wondrous and weird art and curios and talismans. Prior to the episode titled “Pickman’s Model,” del Toro says, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder — but what about the horror? We ascribe these visions to a feverish imagination, a whim, a folly, but what if they are not? What if they are a careful record, a warning. … Our tale tonight is ‘Pickman’s Model,’ and its director, Keith Thomas.” At that point, del Toro places a miniature carving in the director’s likeness in front of a sketchbook of quite disturbing art, and let the episode begin. These intro sequences, which have echoes of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and the Rod Serling classic series “The Twilight Zone” and “Night Gallery,” are exquisite. They’re h

Nonprofit wants to invest in Far South Side with new, renovated homes and retail space if $10M prize is won

Katanya Raby’s family keeps bugging her about a new half-acre park on the city’s Far South Side. That’s because when POP! Heights Park opens Oct. 29, it will be the first new park in 50 years on the portion of South Halsted Street running through the Washington Heights, Morgan Park, West Pullman and Roseland neighborhoods. “I’m really excited to be able to share this with people that I love and the rest of this community that desperately needs this sort of love and attention,” said Raby, director of planning for the Far South Community Development Corp, which partnered with Sheldon Heights Church of Christ on the park project. The nonprofit hopes to get a big boost in helping the area as a contender for the Pritzker Traubert Foundation’s $10 million Chicago Prize 2022. Far South is one of six finalists — all nonprofits with projects on the city’s South and West sides. The prize money is part of a larger $30 million commitment by the foundation to increase development over the

West Town deal takes warehouse to another level

Image
When the Chicago Plan Commission in April approved a new warehouse in West Town, there was excitement in the air. The commission, Chicago’s review agency for large-scale developments, heard from Steve Simmons, director of business and economic development at North Branch Works, who called the project “exciting.” Maurice Cox, the city’s commissioner of planning and development, said, “There are a lot of aspects for this that are intriguing.” The upbeat tone continued with North Branch Works blasting out an email about the project. Then there was the groundbreaking in October, with shovels polished for the ceremonial first digs. Several speakers took turns at the podium. Fair enough, but was it enough to make somebody ask, “What’s so exciting about a warehouse?” These things have a bad name in a lot of places. They are associated with heavier traffic, polluting trucks and physically taxing jobs that might not pay that well. But they have worked their way deeply into our buying ha

Binance narrowing down identity of hacker behind BNB crypto hack: CEO

Image
Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is getting closer to figuring out the identity of a hacker that orchestrated a $570 million hack on its BNB blockchain, CEO Changpeng Zhao told CNBC Monday. After getting some tips from law enforcement on who the hacker might be, Binance is now “narrowing down” the person or persons behind the attack, Zhao said in an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe.” The attack in question saw a so-called cross-chain bridge targeted, allowing an as-yet unknown hacker or hackers to withdraw 2 million of Binance’s BNB tokens worth around $570 million at the time. More than $1 billion has been lost to breaches on cross-chain bridges so far this year, tools that facilitate the swift transfer of tokens from one blockchain platform to another, according to Chainalysis data. Popular in the world of “DeFi,” or decentralized finance, bridges have become a hot target for criminals due to faults in their underlying code. “We’re still actually chasing… helping [autho

This post is part of a series sponsored by IAT Insurance Group. Recently, 24 commercial trucks were rendered useless at an auction house in Pennsylvania when the Common Powertrain Controller (CPC) modules were stolen from the trucks’ dashboards.[1] A string of CPC thefts across the country have left truck owners and fleets with unusable trucks at a time when having available equipment is vital to keeping operations running. Why it’s so hard to find this year

Image
United’s check-in area at Washington Dulles International Airport. Leslie Josephs | CNBC Cheap airfares are hard to find, and it might not get much easier in 2023. Between staffing shortages, aircraft delays and airlines’ conservative schedules after costly travel meltdowns, available seats are limited. Airlines are also passing along higher fuel prices and other costs to customers, keeping ticket prices elevated. But travelers, at least so far, are willing to pay the price. “Holiday flights are going to be expensive once again,” said Scott Keyes, founder of flight-deal site Scott’s Cheap Flights. “The pricing power has shifted back to the airlines for winter holiday travel.” Domestic airfares peaked in May, according to fare-tracker Hopper, but they’re on the rise for the holidays compared with last year. Domestic airfare deals over Thanksgiving are averaging $274, up 19% from 2021, while domestic round trips over Christmas are going for $390, up 40% from last year, Hopper sa
